  A Day In The Garden

Today the Blogging and Journalisim Club went down to the garden and observed the Art , Ceramics and Audiovisiuals clubs.
Mr.Goerge Muscat the ceramics teacher said that what they installed in the soon to be garden was one of two working kilns with the  ‘Raku’ system the other one is in M.C.A.S.T. , this a technique that was developed by the Japanese which uses propane gas as the fuel for the flames. Propane is a crude strong gas that rises the temperature of the kiln faster than the ones used with electricity.
After the ceramic has baked in the kiln for the time needed for the glaze colours to mature it is put into a chamber made of metal, while paper and sawdust are added to make the pieces catch fire. The sawdust is added to turn the white areas black and so the glaze will crack.
The glaze is cracked so that it turns black where the cracks are, if this technique is done correctly it will give the effect of trees, which Japanese pottery is well known for.
To do this you need protection and that is why the artist is wearing gloves, a mask and safety glasses as well as using large metal tongs to grab the red hot ceramic!
*FUN FACT: This technique was discovered by accident when a Japanese potter overheated his clay!*
Meanwhile... the Photography Club is learning how to take a photo from a safe distance, this is imperative because the 900º flames from the kiln would melt their cameras, glasses and their skin!
